First-Ever D&D VR Title: Hasbro’s Collaboration with Resolution Games
Resolution Games is partnering with Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro to develop the inaugural VR game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
This licensing agreement is especially noteworthy alongside Baldur’s Gate 3, the acclaimed RPG from Larian Studios also set in the D&D realm, which holds a prominent place in the gaming community.
Both the Dungeons & Dragons franchise and Wizards of the Coast are under the ownership of Hasbro, which recently announced plans to reduce its workforce by 1,100 positions throughout 2024. These reductions are expected to impact certain teams involved with Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.
Nevertheless, Hasbro remains committed to expanding its video game portfolio and has identified Resolution Games as the “ideal partner” to bring the first D&D VR experience to fruition.
Eugene Evans, SVP of Digital Strategy and Licensing at Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, praised Resolution Games for their ability to unite players and capture the essence of tabletop gaming in digital formats.
“They are an excellent partner to bring a new Dungeons & Dragons video game to life in VR and beyond,” Evans commented. “Dungeons & Dragons and our other esteemed gaming brands continue to attract outstanding partners as we advance our strategy to expand our digital games portfolio through licensing and internal development.”
Resolution Games, known for titles like Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs and Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale, is currently focused on Demeo, a digital tabletop adventure that prominently features D&D influences. Founded nearly a decade ago, the Swedish studio secured $25 million in 2021 to bolster its lineup of live titles.
CEO and founder Tommy Palm expressed gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate on the D&D franchise, noting that Resolution Games looks forward to sharing additional details about the project in the near future.
